Goa

We survived Mumbai! I would not say I will miss its' crowd and dirt and its'16 and a half million people, especially after witnessing how wonderful the countryside can be. Yesterday we hopped on a boat and visited the Elephana island next to Mumbai, famous about its caves with magnificent manifestations of Shiva, the creator, the protector and the destroyer in one. We also had the chance to see the most elegant and shocking hard physical laborers we have come across with so far, enjoyed the never ending mockery of monkeys and finally met some holy cows, or rather bulls.

Huh, after a 16 hours night-bus drive today at 11 am, after 3 hours delay and a rocky sleeping bus road we made it to Benaluim, in South Goa. We tried to avoid the party crowd of the North and we were right; even in the highest season we immediately found our coco hut about 10 steps away from the Arabian sea on a beach which seems to have no end, full of chill-out bars and excellent seafood restaurants. We have a little doggy who found the best sleeping spot under our benches and made acquaintance with the nicest local people selling colorful silk and cotton clothing to pineapple and dolphin-watching boat trips. It is too nice to believe it is real!

We arrived on tuesday at Patnem beach in the south of goa right in time to be ready for a delicious lunch on the beach. This time we decided not to stay on the edge of the beach like we did on other 'golden sand resorts' but move a little further down into the palm tree oasis. This way, we figured, we could save some money and for a change have a night not so close to the hammering night tide while still being able to enjoy yet another surreal environment. So we got a nice room in a wooden barracks-type construction divided into three rental rooms facing the same direction of a grand porch full of colorful hamaks and swing chairs. The middle room was our lucky choice. Two english couples occupied one room each to the left and right of our side walls. Quick shover, jump into a swimsuit, towel and we're ready to go. We closed the door and left to satisfy that increadible desire to eat something marvelously delicious which is at the reach of your hand. It was like being a kid once again who knows nearly for sure what he'll get for christams before the unwrapping and then he gets it. It was with that happiness and the certainty, of getting that thing you longed for, with which we went off to choose a place to eat. After lunch a swim, doggies on the beach, a great book, the sun, a good conversation and snuggling, some photos and soon it was time for dinner. Eventually it was time for the sunset, the glittering stars came out and it was time to for a chill-out launge on the edge of the sea with a kingfisher. We got back when it was pitch dark and went to our room to enjoy a big bed with a great white net hanging from above it. Next morning we woke up to lively discussions in front of our door and someone knocking. The two couples living on both sides of our room were robbed in the night while they were sleeping: backpacks, cameras, money, everything. They had their stuff by the door and they left the window open. Our room was untouched, but our window was also open. Soon it turned out our door was open as well, and my money was within skilful reach of the window. As time passed more and more people started showing up expressing their discontent with loosing their belongings. By the end of the day our room was the only one that wasn't robbed.
May the cats roam.
